Essential Oil Distillation

Essential Oil Distilling

Essential oils, like Lavender or Rose, can be extracted with a still. Currently, the most popular method for extraction is steam distillation.

Distillation:

There are different processes used, however. In all of them, water is heated to produce steam, which carries the harshest chemicals of the aroma filled material with it. The steam is then chilled (in a condenser) and the resulting stuff comes out. The Essential Oil will normally float on top of the Hydrosol (the distilled water component) and may be separated off. Hydrosol is like "Rose Water" and can be sprayed. I use freezing. You can see this in my youtube video.

To start with, I first tried Lavender. French Lavender is amazing. It soothes the emotions. Women love to spray this and bathe or cook in it. Makes a good Mother's Day present.

Distilling should be done as soon as possible after cutting and be processed the same day. Fresh is best. In a well-designed still, distillation can be accomplished in 30 minutes with the bulk of the oil coming over in the first 20 minutes. In average still, it can be about an hour.

After that, you can freeze the hydrosol with the oil and the oil will float to the top and you can pour it off.

Essential Oil distilling is pretty much the same as other distilling projects except you use a basket and you do not use any copper mesh or ceramic rings packing as you would in making ethanol alcohol.
