Special morning glories?

I am growing some fairly rare morning glories this year that I bought and traded for, and I was just wondering, what kind of special needs do they have? I planted them directly and they aren't doing nearly as good as the normal ones - blue star, tall morning glory, ect. The new ones are ALL japanese cultivars, and like I said fairly rare. Anyone have any experience with these?

Is there any chance that you can find out the species of the ones that you have? If you have the cultivar names, perhaps you can do a google search and see what you have. Or you can edit your question and list the names of the ones that you have and someone may recognize them then.

Here is my experience this year. I have four kinds, Ipomoea hirsuta, Ipomoea x imperialis, Ipomoea nil and Ipomoea purpurea. Of these, the most prolific is Ipomoea purpurea followed by Ipomoea nil and tied for third is Ipomoea hirsuta and Ipomoea x imperialis. I seeded these all up the same day and transplanted them into 1-gallons when they were large enough to do so.

The Ipomoea purpuerea and Ipomoea x imperialis are about 2 feet tall and the Ipomoea hirsuta and Ipomoea x imperialis are about 6" tall. Quite a difference.

I have had Ipomoea batatas (ornamental sweet potato) in the past and that grows quite quickly too. I don't have any this year to compare with the ones I'm doing this year unfortunately.
