Top places to visit in Mysore
Mysore, the second biggest city of Karnataka it sits at the foot hills of the Chamundi Hills it is a traveler's paradise and is renowned for some of the finest palaces built by former rulers, majestic buildings, sacred temple complexes and broad and shady boulevards. The tourist attractions of Mysore have their own charm and have fascinating stories and incidents attached to them.
One of the top places to visit in Mysore is the Mysore Palace; it is one of the leading specimens of Indo-Saracen style of architecture with its imposing Durbar Hall. The palace is a treasure trove of sculptures and carvings from all over the world. The majestic golden throne studded with jewels and precious stones displayed during the time of Dasara are worth a watch.
Another important landmark of the city is the Chamundi Hills, the hill house the temple of the patron goddess of the Wodeyars rulers, the Chamundeshwarithe temple, adjacent to the temple is the statue of Mahisura who is said to have been killed by the goddess Chamundeshwari. The hill also houses a huge monolith of Nandi – divine bull of Lord Shiva.
The Brindavan Gardens is another popular tourist destination of the region. The garden also known as the musically lighted garden it is renowned for its ‘Dancing Fountain'.
The Jayachamarejendra zoological Gardens is another destination popular among tourists, known to be one of the biggest zoological gardens in India it is home to wide range of birds and animals including the rarest species that are bred and protected here.
Jaganmohan Palace is another such destination that attracts tourists from all over, now transformed in to an art gallery this splendid three storied building with stained glass shutters showcases some of the rare masterpieces of the royal era. The famous Mysore ‘gold leaf' painting and oil paintings of Raja Ravi Verma and Svetoslav Roerich are also displayed here.
Besides that there are various other tourist attractions spread across the city some of which are St. Philomena's Church, Mysore Zoo, Maharaja's Palace, Mysore Rail Museum, Datta Peetham, Karanji Kere, Jayalakhshmivilas mansion also known as Manasa Gangothri, Melody world and Happy Man Park.
Tourists willing to see Mysore in its full glory should visit the city during the time of Dasara, it being the state festival of Karnataka it is celebrate with great pomp and grandeur over here.
A must do while in the city is to climb up the Chamundi hills to get a splendid view of the city. Tourists indulging in some shopping therapy should remember to pick up the local specialty that is the silk saris, sweets the Mysore Pak, perfumes, incense sticks and sandalwood carvings.
