Significant role to play

Carrier oils play a far more significant role in aromatherapy than many people realise, and in comparison to the essential oils some people feel they are of little importance. To believe this would be a mistake though, because they offer a wealth of health-giving benefits of their own. They contain vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids, and many of them soften and improve the condition of the skin. Technically classed as 'fixed' oils because they do not evaporate, carrier oils are also known as base oils and vegetable oils.

Essential vs. Carrier Oils

Essential oils are distilled from the leaves, bark, roots and other aromatic portions of a botanical. Essential oils evaporate and have a concentrated aroma. Carrier oils, on the other hand, are pressed from the fatty portions (seeds, nuts, kernels) and do not evaporate or impart their aroma as strongly as essential oils. Carrier oils can go rancid over time, but essential oils do not. Instead, essential oils "oxidize" and lose their therapeutic benefits, but they don't go rancid.

Almond, sweet - Prunus amygdalus, P. dulcis (Family, Rosaceae) - USA - Obtained from the Nut of the tree and native to Asia and the Mediterranean this oil is the favorite Carrier oil for Essential oil aromatherapy blends. It can be used by itself for moisturizing skin. Good for all skin types. It is a favorite with aromatherapists, blending well with any other oil and penetrating the skin very well. Excellent for skin. Contains both oleic and linoleic acid an small amounts, vitamins A&B, and copper and iron. For damaged skin mix with equal amount of calendula and for mature skin mix with 10% wheatgerm, borage an macadamia nut oils.

Grapeseed: Botanical Name: Vitus vinifera Aroma: Light, slightly sweet with a hint of a nutty aroma.Texture: ThinColor: Virtually clear and has an almost unnoticeable tinge of yellow/green.Notes: Unlike most other carrier oils, grapeseed oil is solvent extracted and may have trace amounts of chemicals remaining. It has a lower shelf-life and goes rancid rather fast.  Grapeseed oil should be stored in an amber bottle and in a cool dark area to reduce the chance of rancidity.

Coconut oil is, according to folkloric tales, good for many ailments,  from wounds, burns, lice, ect. It also has anti-microbal activity. Coconut oil is an edible oil that has been consumed in tropical places for thousands of years. Studies done on native diets high in coconut consumption show that these populations are generally in good health, and don't suffer as much from many of the modern diseases of western nations.
